AAJA-SF seeks nominees for its 2022 board

The AAJA San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is calling for nominees to run in its election for executive officer positions and board members. One-year terms for all positions start Jan. 1, 2022, and end Dec. 31, 2022.

Please read the descriptions for open positions below and submit nominations and candidate statements via email to aajasanfrancisco@gmail.com by Friday, Dec. 10, at 5 p.m. PT.

Candidates should include their name, employer and a statement outlining their experience with AAJA and their reasons for running to be on the board. This information will be published on the AAJA-SF ballot. The ballots will be sent out to members on Monday, Dec. 13, and voting will remain open through Friday, Jan. 7.

Only full members in good standing are eligible to serve on the board and vote in elections. Good standing includes payment of 2021 dues. In the event there is no candidate for a position, the new board can appoint a member. You may nominate yourself or someone else.

ABOUT THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND OPEN SEATS:

The Board of Directors meets monthly to plan activities, programs and fundraisers as well as discuss issues relevant to the chapter and members. All board members and officers have a fiduciary responsibility to the chapter and assist in the development and organization of at least one chapter event. Board meetings are currently scheduled on the fourth Thursday of the month.

President

  • Oversees management of local board and chapter.
  • Leads board meetings and represents the board and chapter as a whole.
  • Develops relationships with sponsors and assess potential avenues for fundraising
  • Serves as the main spokesperson to the media and the community on behalf of the chapter; represents the chapter in the community.
  • Identifies prospective candidates for board service and ensure their initial involvement in board committees (may delegate to vice president).
  • Ensures proper orientation of new and current board members (may delegate to vice president).
  • Works with secretary to prepare meeting materials in advance.
  • Participates in quarterly conference calls with other AAJA chapter presidents.
  • Liaises with other media and community organization presidents.
  • Organizes programs and events in collaboration with the board.
  • Helps manage chapter social media accounts.

Vice President (2 open positions)

  • Assists the president with his/her responsibilities and committee chairs.
  • In the absence of the president, the vice president convenes monthly board meetings and carries out goals within budget according to the chapter bylaws.
  • Develops relationships with sponsors and assess potential avenues for fundraising
  • Liaises with online, television and print journalists to determine approaches for professional development.
  • Outreaches to online, television and print organizations to foster connections with AAJA.
  • Attends monthly board meetings.
  • Organizes programs and events in collaboration with the board.
  • Helps manage chapter social media accounts

Treasurer

  • In general, manages the board’s financial activities and is responsible for bookkeeping.
  • Encouraged to have a Wells Fargo bank account and/or be familiar with Wells Fargo accounts and statements.
  • Ensures financial records are up to date and provide financial reports to the board, at each meeting.
  • Develops relationships with sponsors and assess potential avenues for fundraising
  • Forecasts spending and earnings for the year.
  • Ensures financial concerns are brought to the attention of the board.
  • Meets and works with auditors and bookkeeper
  • Ensures the proper use of funds and in general the sound management of finances.
  • Creates midyear and end-of-year reports to the national office.
  • Creates monthly financial report and balance sheet for each board meeting.
  • Attends monthly board meetings.
  • Organizes programs and events in collaboration with the board.
  • Helps manage chapter social media accounts.

Secretary

  • Responsible for maintaining board meeting agenda and recording meeting minutes; distributes agenda and minutes to board members.
  • Is responsible for archiving minutes of board meetings and essential documents to Google Docs.
  • If the secretary cannot attend a meeting, arranges to have another board member record minutes.
  • Fundraises for the chapter and the AAJA national organization.
  • Helps manage chapter social media accounts.

At-Large Board Member (two positions)

  • Attends monthly meetings
  • Organizes programs and events in collaboration with the board.
  • Develops relationships with sponsors and assess potential avenues for fundraising
  • Assists in the development and organization of at least one chapter event
