AAJA SF and Comcast will present East West Clicks, a silent auction featuring images produced by our talented local photojournalists and photographers. The event will include other silent auction items such as hotel packages and jewelry as well as food, wine, entertainment and the debut of a new cookbook featuring recipes from some of the Bay Area’s top Asian chefs. It's all for a good cause. East West Clicks raises money for the chapter's scholarship program, which this year is awarding a combined $10,000 to five outstanding student journalists. East West Clicks is 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 at SOMArts, 934 Brannan St. in San Francisco. Our annual Family Picnic and Pre-Convention Mixer is 12 noon Saturday, July 17 at Foster City's Catamaran Park. Join us for food and fun in the sun. We'll fire up the grill and provide the meat, buns and soft drinks. You bring yourself, your family and friends and a side dish or dessert. There's plenty of green space if you want to bring an outdoor game. Catch up with everyone before the AAJA National Convention in August!

Directions: From 101 North and South, exit Hillsdale Blvd. Head
east into Foster City (away from the mountains). Turn right
 on Shell Blvd., go 2 blocks. The park is on corner of
Catamaran and Shell just over the bridge.We'll be stationed
 near the basketball courts.

We'll award up to 10 grants of $300 each to help cover convention costs. Download the grant application at www.aajasf.org/grants, fill it out and send it in. You can also email board member Katherine Tam at tam_kath@hotmail.com to request a copy of the application. The application deadline is May 15. We'll notify recipients by June 1. This year's National Convention is Aug. 4-7 in Los Angeles. Find out what workshops and speakers are planned at www.aaja.org, where you also can register. Registration is $300 for members and $150 for student members through June 18. This doesn't end the membership drive for us, but it was a good chance to build up our numbers again and help National AAJA get back some of its lost membership dues. The challenge was for chapters to build up their numbers from the end of 2009 to March 31, 2010. The winning chapters were the ones that managed the biggest growth or the smallest decline in the three categories of small, medium and large. The SF Chapter donated $100 to each winning chapter and the Asia Chapter donated another $25 to each chapter. So without further ado, the winners are: Small chapter: North Carolina (grew from 15 members to 18 members -- 20 percent growth) Medium chapter: Seattle (grew from 83 members to 87 members -- 5 percent growth) Large chapter: San Francisco (went from 168 members to 155 members -- 8 percent decline) Also, I want to recognize Arizona growing by 17 percent and Portland growing by 8 percent, both in the small chapter category.
