AAJA is offering grants to offset costs for the upcoming UNITY convention in Las Vegas, as well as for professional development and ELP. Additionally, the DC chapter is offering scholarships for student members doing internships in Washington, D.C. this summer.

Application deadlines are fast-approaching so make sure you take advantage of these opportunities. Details enclosed below.

Convention grants

The S.F. Bay Area Chapter is awarding up to 10 grants of $300 each to help its members attend this year’s UNITY convention. To apply, download the grant application and send completed form to chapter co-president Tomio Geron at tgeron [at] gmail [dot] com.

Current dues-paying full, associate and student members are eligible. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Monday, May 14, 2012.

This year’s convention takes place at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas from August 1-4, 2012. The 5th quadrennial event will center on digital training, connecting you with journalism’s top leaders and cutting-edge thinkers, and helping you take control of your career. There is no better place to connect with your AAJA family than during the convention. This is a historic gathering of journalists of color, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender journalists, media professionals, newsroom recruiters, journalism students and individuals who care about diversity and inclusion in news media.

ELP and Professional Development grants

AAJA SF awards grants to help members cover the cost of the Executive Leadership Program as well as for professional development.

This year, we are awarding a total of $1,500 to chapter members planning to attend the Executive Leadership Program (ELP) Thursday, June 28 - Sunday, July 1, 2012 in New York. The grants are intended to help offset program or travel costs. Download an application and apply by 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Send completed applications to chapter co-president Tomio Geron at tgeron [at] gmail [dot] com.

Our chapter also has a total of $1,500 available to chapter members participating in professional development programs. The money can be used to offset costs for social media workshops, journalism seminars — basically anything that might help you further yourself in the journalism field. DC student scholarships

The DC chapter of AAJA is offering two $1,000 scholarships for student members who are doing journalism internships in the Washington, D.C. area this summer. Download application form.

The deadline to apply is Friday, May 4.

Happy Hour This Weekend

Join us for an AAJA happy hour! AAJA’s national board is in town this weekend — let’s show them how the San Francisco chapter rocks! We will be gathering at 6 pm on Friday, March 23 at the Hotel Nikko’s Anzu in Union Square. The first round of appetizers are on us! Anzu is located at 222 Mason Street in San Francisco.

Lunar New Year Banquet

Scholarships: Calling all students!

This year, AAJA SF is awarding up to $8,000 in scholarships to talented student journalists. You don’t have to be a journalism or mass communications major to apply, but you must be able to demonstrate a strong intent to pursue journalism. Students are generally selected for Bay Area scholarships based on their commitment to journalism, journalistic ability, sensitivity to Asian Pacific American issues as demonstrated by community involvement, financial need and scholastic achievement.
